First Pink Plow Truck in Illinois
An innovative idea led Highway Commissioner Dick Schroeder to build the first pink plow truck in Illinois to raise awareness for breast cancer. Even more impressively, he was able to do it at NO additional cost to taxpayers.
He proposed his idea to truck manufacturers, Peterbilt and Monroe, who loved the idea so much that they helped secure discounts on their products. York Township also received special approval from the Susan G. Komen Foundation to paint the plow truck their signature pink.
“Raising awareness for breast cancer is very near and dear to my heart. I lost my mom to breast cancer over 35 years ago and have been advocating for awareness ever since. I spent 12 years on the Board of Governors at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital helping to raise money for cancer research. Many people have been personally affected or know someone that has been affected by breast cancer. It has been touching to receive phone calls from residents who have seen the pink plow truck as a sign of hope. It makes it all worth it!” Said Highway Commissioner Dick Schroeder.
